LECTURE TITLED “MALTA-YARGILAMA MI SÜRGÜN MÜ? (MALTA-A TRIAL OR AN EXILE?)” WAS HELD ONLINE It was recently announced that the Center for Eurasian Studies (AVİM) decided to continue its face-to-face meetings in a virtual environment due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In this new system, the first lecture titled “Malta-A Trial or An Exile?”, at which the main speaker was the Former Deputy Speaker of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey Uluç Gürkan, was held online on Thursday, 8 October 2020.

TASC: WE STAND WITH AZERBAIJAN - IT IS TIME TO FREE THE OCCUPIED AZERI LAND NAGORNO-KARABAKH - SEND YOUR LETTER NOW Our ally Azerbaijan announced a martial law following the resumption of full-scale war in Nagorno Karabakh region of Azerbaijan. On September 27, the detachments of Armenian armed forces illegally stationed in occupied territories of Azerbaijan violated the ceasefire regime and launched an offensive against Azerbaijan by shelling the positions of the Azerbaijani armed forces along the Line of Contact and populated areas beyond the front line. Many civilians were reportedly killed by the intense shelling, including five members of one family, among them children.

CHRISTOPHER GUNN’S PROMOTION TO TENURED ASSOCIATE PROFESSORSHIP OF HISTORY AT COASTAL CAROLINA UNIVERSITY AVİM has the pleasure to inform our readers that Dr. Christopher Gunn has been promoted to tenured associate professorship of History at Coastal Carolina University. Dr. Gunn has been a good friend of AVİM for many years now. He has contributed to AVİM publications and given several speeches at AVİM conferences and lectures. We trust Dr. Gunn will continue with his outstanding research and contribution to the academic literature.

TASC COMMENDS THE 46TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE TURKISH CYPRUS PEACE OPERATION - APPLAUDS TURKISH PARLIAMENTARY UNIFIED VOICE ON TURKISH AND NORTHERN CYPRIOT TERRITORIAL WATERS, SUBCONTINENTAL SHELVES AND EXCLUSIVE ECONOMIC ZONES 46 years ago on July 20, the Turkish Armed Forces carried out a rescue and peace operation on the island of Cyprus, 40 miles off the southern coast of Turkey, to protect the island's Turkish and Muslim community from ethnic cleansing and genocide, and to stop Greece and Hellenic supremacists from taking over the island. The Turkish Republic acted as a guarantor power under the London - Zurich Accords of 1959. Britain, also a guarantor power, agreed with Turkey.

TCA: SCREENING OF 'JAMES BALDWIN/FROM ANOTHER PLACE' - FOLLOWED BY A PANEL DISCUSSION, JUNE 24, 2020, 5:30 - 7:00 PM "I can't breathe, I have to look from outside." These were the words of American novelist and civil rights activist James Baldwin to Turkish drama critic Zeynep Oral in the 1960s on his rationale for going into self-exile to Istanbul, Turkey. As part of its African American-Turkish Connections through the Arts series, TCA will be hosting a screening of Sedat Pakay's short documentary, “James Baldwin/From Another Place” via Zoom.

THE NEW REVISED ENGLISH EDITION OF THE BOOK TITLED ‘ANASTAS MIKOYAN: CONFESSIONS OF AN ARMENIAN BOLSHEVIK’ HAS BEEN PUBLISHED BY AVİM The first edition of the book titled Anastas Mikoyan: Bolşevik Bir Ermeni’nin İtirafları (En. Anastas Mikoyan: Confessions of an Armenian Bolshevik), written by Prof. Dr. Gaffar Çakmaklı Mehdiyev, was originally published in Turkish by Cedit Neşriyat in 2019. As the the Center for Eurasian Studies (AVİM), we are pleased to announce our publication of the revised English translation edition of this book in June 2020.

TASC: REMEMBERING THE 76TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE EXILE OF CRIMEAN TATARS On May 18, 1944, the Stalin regime carried out a mass deportation of Crimean Tatar Turks from their homelands which were occupied by the Soviet Union. Within months, 230,000 Crimean Tatars were deported, mostly to Uzbekistan. Many trekked to Japan from where they immigrated to the United States. Many sought refuge in Turkey where they flourished in freedom, equality, and safety.
