Interview with Bulgarian political scientist Ivan Krastev: Defending the status quo cannot be exciting for anyone. Europe must be able to imagine a society that is better than ours and see opportunities even where there are objectively many risks.

Where do you think the world is heading?

In 1643, an English Protestant priest told his listeners: “We live in turbulent times, and these storms are global.” When I follow the news, I basically have the same feeling. We are at a moment when a certain type of international order has collapsed, we face at least a decade of chaos, and finding a way out of it is becoming the main concern.

And is it even possible – when you watch all the negative trends and events of recent years – for this to end well? And by “well” I mean without a major war or a division of the world into spheres of influence that would not be particularly pleasant for ordinary citizens.
