Vietnam’s President To Lam met with China’s leader Xi Jinping in Beijing on April 15, Chinese state media said, hoping to deepen ties he says are a top priority.

The visit is Mr Lam’s first foreign trip since the Communist Party leader was elected last week as president – the No. 2 position in Vietnamese politics.

He has called ties with Beijing a “top priority” but faces a precarious balancing act between the United States – Vietnam’s main export market – and the country’s largest supplier China.
