Turkey welcomed the acceptance of Bosnia and Herzegovina's European Union membership application, a statement by the foreign ministry said on Wednesday.

"We welcome this decision, taken by the European Union General Affairs Council meeting, which brought together the foreign affairs ministers of European countries'' the statement said, adding that Turkey hopes Bosnia and Herzegovina's EU accession process is successful.

Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu supported Bosnia's bid in his official Twitter account:

"We hope that Bosnia and Herzegovina's accession negotiations process will be concluded successfully. (2/3)"

The foreign ministry also said that Turkey will continue to support the integration of Bosnia and Herzegovina in all European and Atlantic institutions.

On Tuesday, the European Union announced that it will examine Bosnia and Herzegovina's suitability to join the bloc.

Bosnian leaders have strived hard to fulfill reforms to improve living standards and create job opportunities for the country's population in the past year.

The 1992-95 war following the dissolution of Yugoslavia, destroyed the economy, internally displaced over 2.6 million people and killed hundreds of thousands of others.
