Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov and the co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group discussed the issues of accelerating the peace process on the Armenian-Azerbaijani Nagorno-Karabakh conflict settlement within the 71st regular session of the UN General Assembly in New York.
The issues of achieving significant results at the negotiations were also discussed at the meeting, the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry told Trend Sept. 22.
Mammadyarov said that Armenia’s recent provocative actions, in particular, military drills in the occupied territories of Azerbaijan's Aghdam district are aimed at undermining the negotiation process over the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict settlement.
The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.
The 1994 ceasefire agreement was followed by peace negotiations. Armenia has not yet implemented four UN Security Council resolutions on withdrawal of its armed forces from the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding districts.
