Armenia should not count on Russia too much as a key strategic ally, Deputy Foreign Minister Shavarsh Kocharyan said today, commenting on the country’s move to supply Azerbaijan with a new batch of offensive weapons.

“We should not exaggerate our expectations from Russia. Russia is certainly our ally, but excessive expectations against the background [of the current developments] can bring about another situation. This is the reality, and our position on the issue is clear and plain,” he told reporters at the National Assembly.

In their statements addressing the Russian-Azerbaijani weapons sale, high-ranking Armenian officials have repeatedly voiced their concern over the deal.

Asked to comment on his own position, Kocharyan said he is confident that Armenia builds it relations with Russia and other allies relying on that very logic.
