ARARAT MIRZOYAN ELECTED AS CHAIRMAN OF ARMENIAN PARLIAMENT

Former first deputy Prime Minister Ararat Mirzoyan was elected today as chairman of Armenia’s new parliament. He was endorsed by 131 lawmakers out of 132. One ballot was declared invalid. Addressing his fellow lawmakers Mirzoyan said he will try to live up to their trust.

Ararat Mirzoyan was born in 1979 in Yerevan. He is a graduate of the Yerevan State University, where he received bachelor’s and master’s degrees in arts. In 2004 he graduated form the Public Adminisration Academy and a year later he completed a post-graduate course at the  National Academy of Sciences receiving PhD.

From 2003 to 2007 he served as a junior researcher at the Armenian Genocide Museum Institute and at the National Archives of Armenia.  He also worked for HSBC Bank Armenia, Regnum news agency, IFES and for IDEA Foundation.

He is a founding member of the Civil Contract party. In 2017, he was elected to parliament. After  the velvet revolution in April 2018, he was appointed as first deputy prime minister. He is married and has two children. 

In 2018, December 9 early elections Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s My Step bloc won a sweeping victory with 884,864 or 70.42% of votes, Prosperous Armenia scored 103,801 votes or 8.26% and Bright Armenia 80,047 votes or 6.37%. My Step will control 88 seats in the National Assembly, Prosperous Armenia will have 26 members and Bright Armenia 18.
