Ursula von der Leyen has spent much of the past four years jet-setting around the world in search of trade deals.

But all those air miles haven't translated into the agreements she aspired to ink when, in 2019, she launched her "geopolitical" European Commission with a bold pledge to "promote and protect Europe's interests through open and fair trade."

In the latest setback, von der Leyen was forced to cancel this week's trip to a Rio de Janeiro summit that was to have delivered a trade deal with the Mercosur group of South American nations that has been more than two decades in the making.
