Cyprus(*) has opened discussions with Britain over the future of its military bases on the island, President Nikos Christodoulides said Wednesday, following a drone attack this month that raised fears the installations could expose Cyprus to a wider conflict with Iran. 

Officials and legal experts have long expressed concern about the two bases, key British outposts supporting Middle East operations. The March 2 strike on RAF Akrotiri angered Cypriot authorities, who accused Britain of failing to clarify the bases’ non-offensive role and not warning nearby residents of the threat.

Christodoulides said, “We have a clear plan on how to proceed step by step,” adding that London had been informed.
