Slovenia supports European Union (EU) enlargement and sees setbacks in the process as harmful for the stability of Serbia and the rest of the Balkans region, Slovenian Prime Minister Marjan Sarec said Tuesday.

Sarec attended the 5th joint session of governments of Serbia and Slovenia in the northern Serbian city of Novi Sad and held a joint press conference with his Serbian counterpart Ana Brnabic, according to a statement released by the Serbian government.

Slovenia will continue to support Serbia in fulfilling its accession agenda, and further build political and economic ties, the Serbian government statement quoted Sarec as saying.

Sarec said Slovenia would continue supporting Serbia's European path, adding that "unproductive setbacks on this path do not contribute to stability".

Brnabic expressed gratitude for Slovenia's support of the EU integration process of Serbia.

She also said Slovenian companies are among the biggest investors in Serbia, with a total investment of over 1.1 billion euros (1.22 billion U.S. dollars). She noted that 1,500 Slovenian companies employ 25,000 local people in Serbia.

Trade between the two countries amounted to over 870 million euros in the first 9 months of 2019, up 3 percent over the same period of last year.
