Nursultan Nazarbayev on March 19 stepped down as President of Kazakhstan. Senate Speaker Kasym-Jomart Tokayev will be interim president.

“As far as you know, I have the status of the first president and leader of the nation. I will remain the Security Council Chairman, who has serious powers. I will remain Nur Otan party chairman and member of the Constitutional Council. So, I remain with you. Issues of the country and people remain my issue,” Nursultan Nazarbayev said during the televised address to the nation yesterday.

According to the article 4 of the law on the Security Council, the Security Council Chairman has the following powers:

1) overall supervision of Security Council activities;
2) calling regular and extraordinary meetings of the Security Council;
3) giving tasks to the Security Council members;
4) approving the provision on the Security Council;
5) defining regulatory and legal status of the executive office of the Security Council, approving its structure and provision;
6) issuing regulatory acts related to activities of the Security Council;
7) other powers stipulated by the national legislation of Kazakhstan.

The law on the Security Council allows Nazarbayev as the first president of the country and leader of the national to head the Security Council for life.
