KYRGYZ PARLIAMENT APPROVES BILL TO COMPLETELY BAN URANIUM MINING

[Kyrgyzstan] Deputies of the Jogorku Kenesh have approved in the third reading the draft law “On banning activities, related to the geological study of subsurface resources for the purpose of prospecting, exploration and development of uranium and thorium deposits in the Kyrgyz Republic”.

110 MPs voted for the adoption of the law, deputy Azamat Arapbayev opposed it.

The bill provides for a ban on geological prospecting, exploration, development of uranium and thorium deposits throughout the country. In case of passage into law, earlier issued licenses for geological prospecting, geological exploration and development of uranium deposits will be terminated from the moment of coming into force of this law.

Note that this spring public disturbances against the development of uranium deposits near Balykchy town (Issyk-Kul Oblast) occurred.

The initiators are MPs Altynbek Sulaimanov, Almambet Shykmamatov, Kanat Kerezbekov, Myktybek Abdyldayev, Baktybek Turusbekov, Dastan Bekeshev, Junus uulu Altynbek.
