Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and US President Donald Trump are expected to meet Tuesday on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York, ahead of Trump’s summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping, local media reported Friday.

The Japanese and US governments are making arrangements for the talks as Tokyo seeks to coordinate its position with Washington on China before Trump meets Xi on Thursday in the US, according to Kyodo News.

Japan has been seeking talks with Trump amid concerns in Tokyo over the direction of US-China relations, particularly on Taiwan and regional security.
