Several fighters of the Kurdish Peshmerga were killed and injured in an operation launched, in cooperation with the U.S.-led Coalition, southeast of Mosul, BasNews website reported on Monday.

The operation launched against Islamic State in Qargoukh region, near Makhmur, left many militants killed. Moreover, five Peshmerga fighters, including an officer, were killed, while others were wounded.

The operation was launched early on Monday with airstrikes by the Coalition jets, which were followed by operations by the Peshmerga.

The joint operation between the Kurdish troops and the Coalition comes after around two weeks of another operation in the same region. An informed source said, late June, that a joint operation was launched there, leaving a senior Islamic State member killed.

On Saturday, fourteen members of Islamic State cells were arrested as a wide-scale security operation was carried out, south of Mosul, spokesperson for Nineveh Police Command said.

Last week, twenty-three Islamic State members, including leaders, were arrested, northwest of Mosul, as security forces carried out an operation in Badush village to follow the militants.

Thousands of Islamic State militants as well as Iraqi civilians were killed since the government campaign, backed by paramilitary troops and the coalition was launched in October 2016.

The group still has dormant cells, through which it carries out attacks, across Iraq like it used to do before 2014.
