The European Union signed on 19 November an agreement on border management cooperation between Serbia and EU’s Border and Coast Guard Agency, Frontex. The strengthened cooperation will increase security at the EU’s external borders, as it aims to tackle illegal immigration and cross-border crime.

Under the agreement, Frontex and Serbia will carry out joint operations in the regions of Serbia that border the EU. It will provide increased technical and operational assistance at the border.

Similar agreements between the EU and partner countries were signed with Albania in October 2018 and Montenegro in October 2019. The agreements with North Macedonia and Bosnia and Herzegovina are pending finalisation.
