Jiji Press TOKYO (Jiji Press) — Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and U.S. President Donald Trump agreed Monday to work together to make a U.S.-North Korean summit successful.

Abe and Trump agreed that they will meet before a U.S.-North Korean summit.

The Japanese and U.S. leaders agreed that their countries will work closely together to make a U.S.-North Korean summit meaningful, Abe told reporters after his 30-minute phone conversation with Trump.

The Abe-Trump meeting may be held on the sidelines of a Group of Seven summit in Canada in June or on other occasions, Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary Yasutoshi Nishimura told reporters.

During the phone talks, Abe asked Trump again to bring up the issue of Pyongyang’s abductions of Japanese citizens at a meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

Abe said he told Trump that the abduction issue needs to be resolved at any cost.

Referring to his meeting with the families of Japanese abductees earlier on Monday, Abe said he conveyed their feelings to Trump.
