AVİM is deeply saddened over the passing away of Mr. Jean-Louis Mattei on Saturday, 15 June 2019. Mr. Mattei was well-known for his historical research, book translations, and contributions to the Turkish-French cultural interaction.

Mr. Mattei came to Ankara in 1976 in the framework of cultural-educational cooperation with Tevfik Fikret High School and learned modern and Ottoman Turkish. In subsequent years, he gave lessons on language education in Galatasaray High School and Department of French of the Faculty of Education at Uludağ University. Throughout his career, Mr. Mattei translated many books in Turkish and French languages and published works on historical topics. Having served on AVİM's Editorial Board and on the Editorial/Advisory Board of our Ermeni Araştırmaları journal, he also published studies on the 1915 events and Turkish-Armenian controversy.
