On 17 May 2017, Center for Eurasian Studies (AVİM) hosted Assist. Prof. Brendon J. Cannon at the conference titled “Legislating Reality and Politicizing History: Contextualizing Armenian Claims of Genocide and Responses to the Campaign”.
Assist. Prof. Brendon J. Cannon received his Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Utah, USA and his MA in Middle East Studies and History from the same institution. He currently teaches at Khalifa University’s Institute of International & Civil Security (IICS) in Abu Dhabi, UAE. His current research interests include the late Ottoman Empire and early Republican Turkey, Turkish foreign policy -particularly in relation to Africa, non-state armed actors, transnational political violence, and the Armenian campaign. He is the author of several academic articles and books including Legislating Reality and Politicizing History: Contextualizing Armenian Claims of Genocide (Offenbach am Main: Manzara Verlag, 2016), “A Truly Global Crime? The Campaign for Armenian Genocide Recognition and Africa” (in Review of Armenian Studies, Vol. 34, pp. 53-71, 2017); “Turkey in Kenya and Kenya in Turkey: Alternatives in Diplomacy, Trade and Education to China and the West” (in African Journal of Political Science and International Relations, 10(5), pp. 56-65, 2016); and “Deconstructing Turkey’s Efforts in Somalia” (in Bildhaan: An International Journal of Somali Studies, 16(14), 2016).
At the conference, Assist. Prof. Cannon spoke about the identity-based genesis and related fecundity of the Armenian campaign in relation to the events of 1915. He also explored how the Armenian position has achieved recognition and the reactions to the Turkish position. Additionally, Assist. Prof. Cannon outlined inconsistencies in the Armenian campaign and highlighted potential elements of changing the debate.
