On 15 April, 2016, on the occasion of the release of the special issue of International Crimes and History dedicated to Crimean Tatars under Tsarist Russia and Soviet Union, the Center for Eurasian Studies (AVİM) held a conference on the subject of Crimea and the Crimean Tatars. The keynote speakers of the meeting were Asst. Prof. Tümen Somuncuoğlu (Gazi University Department of History) Prof. Dr. Ayşegül Aydıngün (METU Department of Sociology and Eurasian Studies Programme; On the Editorial Board of International Crimes and History) and Prof. Dr. İsmail Aydıngün (Başkent University Department of Political Science and International Relations).

As the first speaker, Asst. Prof. Tümen Somucuoğlu gave a historical background of Crimea and discussed the situation of the Crimean Tatars from the establishment of the Crimean Khanate in the 15th century up to their deportation in 1944. Prof. Dr. Ayşegül Aydıngün made a brief analysis of the Unofficial Turkish Delegation’s report on Crimea, which covered the situation of the Crimean Tatars following the Russian Annexation of Crimea. Lastly, Prof. Dr. İsmail Aydıngün touched upon the recent developments in Crimea.

The conference ended with an extensive Q&A session.
