The Myawady and Tachileik border crossings have been designated as customs offices to meet the requirements of an ASEAN agreement, said U Maung Maung Win, deputy minister of Planning and Finance.

U Maung Maung Win told the Pyidaungsu Hluttaw (bicameral legislature) on Monday about the two new offices, which were set up as part of the ASEAN Framework Agreement on the Facilitation of Goods in Transit.

The new offices, which will be under the authority of the Customs Department, are aimed at speeding the flow of goods via roads in transit countries along ASEAN’s South-North Corridor, which connects Singapore to Thailand and Laos.

The 10 members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations signed the agreement in Hanoi, Vietnam, in 1998. It has nine protocols, including the designation of frontier posts.

Myanmar ratified another part of the agreement in July 2016. The setting up of customs offices was the next step in implementing the agreement, U Maung Maung Win said.
