Just nine kilometers from the Italian coastal town of Ventimiglia, stands a sign announcing the beginning of France’s first town after the border: “Menton, the pearl of France, is happy to welcome you”.

Ironically, this pearl of France is one of the least welcoming places for migrants crossing Europe.

A few meters from this panel is the police station of the Border Police (PAF). According to observations carried out by the CAFI (French Coordination of Border Actions), at least 100 migrants are brought to this facility every day, often detained for hours in inhumane conditions and ultimately expelled according to procedures contrary to European and international law.
