U.S. officials and Taliban representatives signed a peace deal in Doha, Qatar on February 29.

The deal is aimed at ending the U.S. longest war, fought in Afghanistan since 2001.

The agreement signed in the presence of leaders from Pakistan, Qatar, Turkey, India, Indonesia, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan, will pave the way for the US to gradually withdraw its troops from Afghanistan.

Deputy Head of Political Office of the Taliban Abdul Salam Hanafi in Qatar highly valued the efforts of the President of Uzbekistan.

“He voiced very good initiatives for the sake of peace, stability and security in our country. We value that. The nations of Uzbekistan and Afghanistan are bound with historical roots. Security of Afghanistan means security for Uzbekistan. Hopefully, we will cooperate,” Abdul Salam Hanafi said.

Another Deputy Head of Political Office of Taliban Qari Din Mohammad Hanif underlined that peace and stability should be brought to the region.

“We know the President of Uzbekistan put forward important initiatives to bring peace to Afghanistan and today we are reaching this historic result. Afghanistan and Uzbekistan have common borders, culture. We live on opposite sides of one river. Our fates are tied historically like 5 fingers of one hand. Your assistance in bringing peace, construction, education and other areas is much more effective than aid from far away countries,” he said.

U.S. Special President’s Envoy for Afghanistan Zalmay Mamozy Khalilzad said the Tashkent conference initiated by the President of Uzbekistan played an important role for achievement of present practical results.
