Cyprus’(*) opposition to Turkish participation in the European Union’s Security Action for Europe (Safe) defence procurement programme has been formally accepted by the EU, President Nikos Christodoulides confirmed on Thursday.

“I am pleased that our position regarding the participation of non-member states in the Safe financial instrument has been adopted,” Christodoulides said upon arriving at the European Council meeting in Brussels.

“No third country that occupies territories or threatens the security of member states can, under any circumstances, participate in or utilise any of the EU’s financial instruments in defence and security,” he added.

(*) AVİM uses "Cyprus" as a geographic name. AVİM considers the expression "Republic of Cyprus" to mean the Greek Cypriot Administration of Southern Cyprus.
