Belgrade Court of Appeal has reduced the sentence for former Bosnian Serb Army soldier Dalibor Krstovic from nine to five years in prison after he was convicted of crimes against the civilian population for raping a Bosniak woman in the town of Kalinovik in August 1992.

Krstovic was found guilty of raping the woman when she was being held captive in an elementary school in Kalinovik. The appeal verdict, handed down after a retrial, was made public on Friday.

The court said in a statement that in deciding on the length of sentence, it had “considered as mitigating circumstances his personal and family circumstances, the fact that he had not been convicted before and that he was 20 years old when the actions were taken, while the aggravating circumstances were [his] persistence during the coercion of the injured party, as well as the severity of the threat to the injured party on the specific occasion”.
