Balkan Insight (26 February 2018)

Serbia and Kosovo are due to meet for another round of EU-mediated talks in Brussels on February 26 and 27.

While the two sides are expected to discuss implementation of agreements adopted previously – including the status of the Serb-run north of Kosovo, energy and freedom of movement – Belgrade has announced it will also be seeking information about the investigation into the January murder of the Kosovo Serb politician Oliver Ivanovic.

Marko Djuric, the head of the Serbian government's Kosovo office, on February 19 said Belgrade would have many questions for Kosovo, which is why the Belgrade delegation would also include police experts.

The last round of talks was interrupted on January 16, when Serbian representatives left the talks on hearing about the murder of Ivanovic.

He was shot dead on January 16 in front of his party’s offices in the northern, Serb-run part of the town of Mitrovica. His murder was condemned by Serbia, Kosovo and the international community.

Ivanovic had said several times that he and his family had received threats, and had asked Kosovo, Serbia and others for help – but without any result.

Serbia and Kosovo have pledged to exchange information on the case, but cooperation has been slow.

The case is still open and there have been no arrests so far.
