The situation in the Caucasus remains complicated, and extra-regional players, such as the United States and the European Union, have a destructive influence on its development, Russian armed forces chief of staff General Valery Gerasimov said Wednesday during a briefing for the military attachés of foreign countries.

“The desire of extra-regional players—first of all, the U.S. and the European Union—to strengthen their positions in the region… To keep Georgia and to draw Armenia into their sphere of influence, is destructive. The West is aiming to destabilize the situation,” Gersimov said, adding that Russia is taking “constructive steps in the region.”

The Russian general said that Western powers are attempting to engage these countries—Georgia and Armenia—in active anti-Russian actions like in the Ukrainian scenario.
