On the 105th anniversary of the Moscow Treaty, the Russian Foreign Ministry issued a statement praising the unique character of relations between Moscow and Ankara, describing their partnership as an "absolutely new type of interstate interaction." The ministry emphasized that the foundational principles established in 1921 continue to shape bilateral ties, fostering a relationship built on equality, sovereignty, and mutual respect.
Foundations of modern partnership
In its official statement commemorating the March 16, 1921 agreement, the Russian Foreign Ministry highlighted the treaty's enduring significance as a cornerstone of Russian-Turkish relations. "Proclaiming in its preamble the principles of 'the brotherhood of nations and the right of peoples to self-determination,' the treaty marked a decisive break with the policy of imperialist claims of the past," the ministry declared. This historic document, signed by the governments of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic and the Grand National Assembly of Türkiye, formally renounced imperialist ambitions and established a framework for cooperation between the two nations.
Principles retain relevance in modern era
The ministry emphasized that the core values embedded in the Moscow Treaty over a century ago have retained their "creative energy" and continue to evolve within contemporary geopolitical realities. "The political dialogue at the highest levels is confidential and intensive," the statement noted, pointing to the sustained engagement between Turkish and Russian leadership. This ongoing communication reflects the durability of the 1921 accord's guiding principles, which prioritize sovereign equality and consideration of each nation's fundamental interests in shaping bilateral policy.
