More than half a billion euros coming in the country from migrant workers who live and work abroad, has led to a growth of consumption.

Kosovo’s Finance Minister, Avdullah Hoti says that the money coming from abroad must not only be used for consumption and properties, but also to develop businesses and manufacturing.

“The Diaspora plays an important role in the economic development of the country and this is reflected on the amounts of remittances. But according to the figures we have, the majority of these funds go for consumption and properties. It would be good if these funds were spent to open up new businesses, as the best way to develop Kosovo and to open new jobs”, Hoti says.

Kosovo is considered as one of the countries with the highest remittances from migrant workers. A study over remittances in Kosovo published a while ago, indicates that 43% of the citizens of Kosovo have family members who live abroad, while 22,4% have received remittances from their relatives.
