As the US hunts for more capacity to counter air threats in the Middle East, Nato’s eastern flank is clinging to its Patriot systems, which shield the region from Russian ballistic missiles.

Washington and its Gulf allies, now deep into a military campaign against Iran, are burning through interceptor stocks that were already scarce. 

As a result, there aren’t enough Patriot missiles to go around, highlighting the need for Europe to launch its own air-defence program — urgently.
