Sebastian Kurz, OSCE chairperson-in-office, Austria’s foreign minister, and the Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov will mull the Nagorno-Karabakh settlement in Moscow, said the Russian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Maria Zakharova, according to a message on the ministry’s website.
Zakharova made the remarks during a briefing on Jan. 12.
The talks will take place as part of the OSCE chair’s official visit to Moscow on Jan. 17-18.
Kurz and Lavrov will exchange views on the Austria’s OSCE chairmanship in 2017 and discuss cooperation on this platform taking into consideration the challenges connected with regional conflicts, Zakharova said.
The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts. The 1994 ceasefire agreement was followed by peace negotiations.
Armenia has not yet implemented four UN Security Council resolutions on withdrawal of its armed forces from the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding districts.
