Russia’s war in Ukraine has pushed Europeans to do more for their own security, but this new strategic autonomy should not result in protectionism, former Finnish prime minister Alexander Stubb told EURACTIV in an interview.

“In the future, we’ll be able to take care more of our defence needs, but American security will still be the cornerstone of European security – and that’s actually quite a good thing,” Stubb said on the sidelines of the virtual CEPA Forum.

Speaking of European ‘strategic autonomy’ – a concept advocated primarily by France, even before Russia invaded Ukraine, to promote its industrial base – Stubb warned that while it could benefit the EU, it also could be used as an excuse for protectionist policies.
