German Chancellor Angela Merkel is set to visit Azerbaijan on August 25 in a bid to drive existing bilateral relations forward, Azeri Foreign Ministry's spokesman Khikmet Gadzhiyev told Sputnik on Tuesday.

"Merkel's visit to Azerbaijan is scheduled for August 25.

This visit is aimed at expanding bilateral cooperation Baku and Berlin have friendly relations that are based on mutual understanding and mutually beneficial cooperation. We hope that the visit will give impetus to the expansion of bilateral ties," he said.

Gadzhiyev added that the visit had been in the works on both sides for some time.
