In order to improve public safety, Kazakhstan has implemented a National Video Monitoring System in Almaty and Astana that integrates artificial intelligence (AI). The technology has the capacity to automatically record offenses, detect unattended objects in public locations, and identify wanted individuals. AI-driven "computer vision" can identify vehicles by their maker, model, and color, Kazinform News Agency reports citing Polisia.kz.

These "smart" cameras are responsible for monitoring critical locations, such as train stations, airports, hotels, roadways, crossroads, and retail centers. The technology has already shown success during big events like the World Nomad Games in Astana, when it found missing people and located lost children. It also helped thirty wanted offenders in Almaty and forty-six in Astana to be arrested.
