Iraqi paramilitary forces killed on Sunday an Islamic State suicide bomber, who was planning to carry out a terrorist attack in Makhoul hills in northeastern Diyala.

“Acting upon accurate intelligence reports, the pro-government troops of al-Hashd al-Shaabi launched a security operation to track down Islamic State remnants in Makhoul hills,” Almaalomah news website quoted the media service of al-Hashd al-Shaabi as saying in a press statement.

“The operation resulted in killing an IS terrorist wearing an explosive belt, and destroying a tunnel that was used by the terrorists for hiding and launching attacks against security forces and citizens,” the statement read.

In January 2015, Iraqi forces announced liberation of Diyala province from Islamic State extremist militants who proclaimed an “Islamic Caliphate” in Iraq and Syria in 2014.

The province has seen months of fighting between Iraqi troops and IS militants especially in the Jalawla and Saadiyah areas in the province’s north and areas near the town of Muqdadiyah.
