Iraq’s Parliament unanimously adopted a resolution rejecting US President Donald Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, warning that the move undermines international safety and security, the Anadolu Agency reported yesterday.

MP Ali Al-Safi told the news organisation: “The parliament considered Trump’s decision provocative for all religions.”

Trump’s recognition led to global protests and calls for boycotts of both Israel and the US. The UN General Assembly also voted to condemn the move with a large majority.

International law recognises East Jerusalem as occupied territory.

Al-Safi said that the legislation adopted by Parliament stipulates that the Federal Iraqi Government must take the necessary diplomatic measures at the UN to guarantee the position of Jerusalem as the capital of Palestine.

According to the UN, Jerusalem is one of the final-status issues whose position should be resolved through direct and peaceful negotiations between the Palestinians and the Israelis.
