India’s top court paused the implementation of certain provisions of a recently amended law governing Muslim-owned properties donated for religious and charitable purposes, months after the Parliament cleared it.

The Supreme Court of India passed an interim order on Sept 15, on petitions challenging the constitutional validity of the amended legislation. Changes in the provisions on validity of Waqf properties and some rules regarding board composition have been temporarily suspended, pending the court’s final ruling.

The term Waqf refers to land or real estate gifted to Muslims for religious, educational or other philanthropic purposes.
