The situation in the Middle East and possible risks for the region were discussed in a phone call between Bulgaria’s caretaker Defence Minister Atanas Zapryanov and the Minister of National Defence of the Republic of Turkiye Yasar Guler. The conversation took place on March 4, the Bulgarian Defence Ministry said on Friday.

The phone call had also been mentioned earlier by Zapryanov. On Thursday, he said he was due to hold talks later in the day with Greece’s defence minister, while earlier in the morning he had discussed the situation in the Middle East with his Turkish counterpart.

According to the Defence Ministry, both sides voiced deep concern over the development of the military conflict. The two ministers maintained that the escalation must be stopped and that efforts to achieve peace should be supported. The Bulgarian side said that the country supports the position that Iran should end its nuclear programme, which poses a threat to international peace and security.
