The first months of 2024 will be a major test for Bulgaria’s fragile political stability after a two-year stalemate. Bulgaria started 2023 with little faith that the near-continuous cycle of elections would be put on hold. But the year ends with a pro-West coalition in power, even if brittle, and treated with scepticism by much of society.

 

Crucial year for ‘ready-made’ govt

Following tense coalition talks, in June the current government took power, consisting of two opposing blocs – both previously adamant they wouldn’t work together. On one side is the reformist duo of “We Continue the Change” and Democratic Bulgaria and on the other – their rivals from GERB and United Democratic Forces, associated with the antics of GERB leader and former PM Boyko Borissov who left a legacy of allegations of widespread corruption.
