On 5 November 2020, the lecture titled “The Practices Regarding the Governance of the Armenian Minority in the Republic of Turkey (Cumhuriyet Döneminde Ermeni Azınlığın İdaresine Yönelik Uygulamalar)”, at which the main speaker was Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ramazan Erhan Güllü (faculty member of the Department of History of the Republic of Turkey at Istanbul University) was held online.

In his presentation, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Güllü examined the relations of the Armenian minority with the state in the Ottoman Empire and later in the Republic of Turkey period within the framework of legal texts. As is known, Armenians had been recognized as a separate nation under the administration of the Armenian Patriarchate under the millet system in the Ottoman period. The regulation of the Armenian Nation, which was announced in the post-Tanzimat period, was an administrative text covering the legal practices and customs towards Armenians. With the transition to the republic in 1923, the Armenians would be governed as one of the minority communities in Turkey. In his presentation, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Güllü presented a detailed analysis of new practices and changes along with the regulations adjusted in the administrative structure of the republic and the arrangements made within the scope of the patriarchate for the administration of the Armenian minority since the Treaty of Lausanne.

The lecture was concluded by a lively Q&A session.
