Iraqi President Barham Salih has stressed the need for bolstering relations with the European Union (EU) to achieve stability in the Middle East region.

The president made the remarks Tuesday during a meeting with EU Ambassador to Iraq Ramon Blecua at the As Salam palace in Baghdad, the Iraqi presidency said in a press statement.

“Iraq adopts a clear and principle-based policy towards regional and international issues in order to achieve security and stability in the region,” Salih said.

He also lauded efforts exerted by Blecua “to develop relations between Iraq and the European Union.”

For his part, Blecua said that the European Union considers cooperation with Iraq “a major priority” because of its regional and international influence, as well as its ability to play an active role in resolving regional crises.
