Romania’s arms exports increased by 20 per cent in 2017, according to official statistics, but the country still lags behind some of its neighbours.
Romania’s arms exports increased in 2017 compared to the year before, according to official statistics released by the government.
A report by the Foreign Ministry said the value of arms exports in 2017 amounted to almost 187 million euros. Bucharest also sold 263 million euros worth of licenses.
In 2016, Romania exported about 178 million euros worth of weapons, about 57.3 million of which went to the Middle East.
The report said Romania exported weapons and military equipment to 50 countries in 2017.
However, the country is lagging behind its neighbour, Bulgaria, which broke its own record in 2016, selling over one billion euros worth of military equipment and weapons, according to a report by the country’s state commission for exports.
The biggest clients for Romania’s military industry is, by far, the United States. Washington in 2017 bought over 77 million euros worth of various rifles, semi-automatic rifles, machine-guns, pistols, rifle components, various ammunition and parts and equipment for military airplanes and helicopters.
In 2016, the US spent only 67.5 million euros on Romanian weapons and equipment.
