The Serbian government's Commission for Missing Persons said on Wednesday that the bodies of nine Serbs killed during the Croatian Army's Operation Storm in August 1995 have been exhumed in the Lika area of Croatia.

"Samples were taken from all the exhumed remains for identification using DNA analysis," the commission said in a press release.

According to the commission's data, a total of 240 persons have been exhumed in Lika to date, and 177 have been identified. The commission has previously said that it is seeking 1,746 missing persons in Croatia.

During Operation Storm, Croatian forces regained territory controlled since late 1991 by rebel Croatian Serbs, who had been helped by the Yugoslav People’s Army and Serbian paramilitaries.

The Croatian Helsinki Committee has estimated that 677 civilians were killed during and after the operation.

The operation also led to a humanitarian crisis, as up to 200,000 Serb civilians left Croatia during and after the operation.
