– The Iraqi army and its allied Shiite Hashd al-Shaabi militia began an offensive to recapture the predominantly Sunni town of Shargat in Iraq’s northern Salahaddin province on Tuesday..

Iraq’s official Iraqiya television aired a statement from Prime Minister Haidar Abadi announcing the start of the operation to recapture Shargat from the Islamic State (ISIS) group.

Since the town fell to ISIS in 2014, the Iraqi army made some advances towards the town last June, recapturing the villages of Albu Amira and Ein Bayza in the surroundings of Shargat.

According to a Rudaw correspondent at the scene, three Iraqi brigades are taking part involved in the offensive, and approaching the town from three sides. Some 1,400 Hashd al-Shaabi forces are also involved in the offensive.
