The Iranian foreign ministry welcomed efforts to resolve the crisis in the Korean peninsula, but meantime, cautioned Pyongyang to keep vigilant in talks with the US as Washington has recently withdrawn from its undertakings under the 2015 nuclear deal.

"Our general and principled policies about the Korean peninsula are clear and we are interested in the establishment of peace, stability, security and tranquility in the Korean peninsula like other parts of the world and we will certainly welcome any step which helps the regional welfare," Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi told reporters in a press conference in Tehran on Monday.

He referred to the bad record of the US, specially President Trump, and its withdrawal from different deals and treaties, and said, "We still look at Trump and the US behavior with pessimism and we cannot be optimistic about the US behavior and the Korean government should keep vigilant."

The first-ever meeting between sitting US and North Korean leaders is set to happen in Singapore on Tuesday with potentially major consequences for Asia and the international community.

President Donald Trump and North Korea's Kim Jong Un, who arrived separately to the Southeast Asian city-state on Sunday, are due to meet face-to-face Tuesday morning at the Capella Hotel, a luxury hotel located on the resort island of Sentosa.

Washington is hoping the bilateral discussions will be the first of many with Kim's government, eventually culminating with the country surrendering its nuclear capabilities.
