Serbia is to reinstate compulsory military service in a move it says will strengthen the country’s defensive capabilities amid global instability.

Originally scrapped in 2011, the draft will be reintroduced in 2026 and will last 75 days for men aged 19 to 27, Serbia’s public broadcaster RTS reported. It will be divided into two months of intensive preparation and two weeks of field exercises.

Those who refuse to take part on ideological grounds will be able to choose an alternative civilian service, albeit with a duration twice as long, while military service will remain voluntary for women.
