French Prime Minister Édouard Philippe has confirmed that a man arrested on a French motorway is the suspect wanted in connection with this morning’s attack in a Parisian suburb.

Elite police officers shot and arrested the man on the A16 motorway near Marquise, close to Calais.

A witness told Reuters news agency they saw a BMW car, the model used in the attack, with several bullet holes in it.

One policeman was wounded by a stray bullet in the operation.

Soldiers taking part in Operation Sentinel were hit by a BMW in Levallois-Perret, a suburb to the north of Paris, this morning (August 9) at around 8 am.

Six soldiers were hurt, three seriously. The others have lighter injuries, according to the French Ministry of Defence.

The mayor of Levallois said the attack was “without a doubt a deliberate act”.
