The first in a decade meeting of the Khalk Maslakhaty (People's Council) of Turkmenistan was held in Ashgabat under the chairmanship of President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, President’s Office reported on September 25.

The Khalk Maslakhaty gathered for the first time since September 2008, when it was abolished. Since that time, another council of Yashulylar Maslahaty (Council of Elders) has gathered in Turkmenistan, but it had the status of an advisory body.

In October 2017 meeting of Yashulylar Maslahaty, it was decided to transform the council back into the Khalk Maslakhaty. The last meeting of council of elders decided on cancellation of free gas, electricity and water for the citizens of Turkmenistan.

More than 2500 representatives of all five regions and Ashgabat city took part in the Khalk Maslakhaty. The agenda of the national forum included the priority tasks for the further comprehensive development of the Turkmen state and society.
