The European Commission has approved EUR 251.8 million investments in the metro line 5 in Bucharest.

“Thanks to the European Union, Bucharest will have a modern metro network,” EC commissioner Corina Cretu said yesterday.

The new metro section will connect the west of the city to the central part, from the Raul Doamnei station in the Drumul Taberei neighborhood to the Eroilor metro station. The section will have seven kilometers with 10 new stations and a depot.

About 64,000 people will use the line daily. They will be able to travel between the two points in Bucharest in less than 15 minutes. The metro line should be finalized in June 2018, according to the EC.

Work on the Drumul Taberei metro line started in 2011 and was supposed to be completed in 2015, but numerous delays postponed the opening of this important line.
