The creation of a center for humanitarian response of the countries of the Caspian region has been launched in Baku.
This was stated by director of the Agency for the provision and coordination of Russian participation in international humanitarian operations (Emercom) under the Russian Ministry of Emergencies Yuri Brazhnikov in connection with the World Civil Defense Day, celebrated on March 1, TASS reported.
“The first Russian-Serbian humanitarian center was established in the Serbian city of Nis, it justified our hopes and proved its effectiveness. The next one will be created in Baku,” he said.
The creation of the center will be a logical continuation of the agreement on cooperation of the emergency departments of the Caspian countries - Russia, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan and Iran - signed two years ago, according to Brazhnikov.
“Based on this document, we created the Academy of Civil Defense in Azerbaijan, handed over our laboratory, classes, educational base. This is the third center that is created in the interests of the Caspian region. In fact, its creation has already begun - the base has been created,” he said.
The director of the Emercom said that the establishment of subsequent centers will primarily be carried out in countries whose civil defense systems are organized in the same way as Russia’s - Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and, possibly, Kazakhstan.
“Kazakhstan is also making steps towards the establishment of international centers. The Kazakhstan-Kyrgyzstan center has already been established there on the basis of our experience,” he explained.
The Russian-Serbian Humanitarian Center in Nis was established pursuant to an agreement signed between the governments of Russia and Serbia on April 25, 2012.
The center is an inter-governmental humanitarian non-profit organization exercising the rights of a legal entity. It has been set up to provide humanitarian response to emergency situations in Serbia and other Balkan countries.
