Bosnia and Serbia have signed an agreement to cooperate in the construction of a motorway that will link their capital cities - Sarajevo and Belgrade, the Bosnian transport ministry said.

The agreement serves to coordinate the future activities on the project, including the construction of a new bridge over the Sava river which forms part of the border between the two states at Raca, as well as the construction of a border checkpoint at Raca and the reconstruction of the Kotromani-Vardiste border checkpoint, among others, the ministry said in a statement on Friday after Bosnia's deputy transport minister Sasa Dalipagic and Serbian infrastructure minister Zorana Mihajlovic signed the agreement.

Bosnia and Serbia have also committed to form within 30 days a joint operational body which will run these activities, Dalipagic said in the statement.

The agreement will help the continuation of construction works which were launched in October and the issuance of construction permit for the Sava bridge.

In October, Turkish civil engineering company Tasyapi officially launched the construction of the first section (Sremska Raca-Kuzmin) of the motorway on Serbian territory.

Serbia's prime minister Ana Brnabic said in June that the construction of the Sremska Raca-Kuzmin section is valued at 120 million euro ($134 million), while the estimated cost of the new bridge over the Sava river is 100 million euro.
